Church History
On September 12th, 1965, the Whitewater Christian Evangelizing Fellowship organized a new Church of Christ: Christian congregation. Meeting in a theatre building in Milan, Moores Hill Church of Christ was born.
That first day, brothers and sister from nearby congregations filled the theatre with approximately 475 worshipers. By the end of the service, the church had its first two members. Mrs. Cecelia Doyle was baptized into Christ and Leo Doyle transferred his membership. The work had begun!
W.C.E.F. selected William Reed to serve as the first minister. Under his leadership land was purchased and the original building was erected. On January 14th, 1968 the congregation met for the first time at this new location. Two months later Moores Hill was again joined by brothers and sisters from neighboring congregations to dedicate the new building.
Less than four years after moving into their new home, a diligent body of believers paid off the bank note, and in August of 1971 the purchase debt was retired. Moores Hill Church of Christ was self- supporting, freeing W.C,E,F, to start further work.
1978 was an exciting year for our congregation. New pews expanded the seating capacity , and ground was broken on a new educational addition for the building. Under the leadership of Dan Funch, men of the church came together to accomplish this massive undertaking. The addition included a full sized basement to be used as a fellowship area, as well as five classrooms. By the spring of ‘79 the new additions were up and running… And so were the number of families calling Moores Hill Church of Christ their church home.
For outdoor fellowships and events, a picnic shelter was built in 1982. This facility was constructed in memory of Harry Mark Louden, the son of Jack and Myrna Kittle.
It was during this time, the elders saw the need of having a youth minister to serve the congregation and the youth program began to grow. In addition to the many young men and women who have served as youth minister, countless members have volunteer their time and skills help our youth experience Christ’s love and grow in their faith.
By 1989, the growth of the church caused the need of another expansion. Our men responded again, adding a nursery and minister’s office to the front of the building. The following year the parking lot was blacktopped and a church sign was erected.
In 1994, the members rolled up their sleeves again and started work on the current fellowship hall. This brought our gatherings out of the basement and made them easily accessible to all of our members.
Over the years ten minister’s have served this body of believers. We have laughed and cried with one another; leaned on each other during lives ups and downs; while all the time reaching out to our neighbors with God’s saving message.
It hasn’t all been easy, but there truly is ‘no better place on earth’
